Yesterday at Green Lake, a little squirrel hopped up on the bench beside me. I had put my half eaten apple down earlier, as I was taking a break and just enjoying my book and the park.
He scampered closer and began eating my apple! I was happy to share it (it was clear who needed the calories more) and after he took two bites, HE GRABBED THE ENTIRE THING WITH HIS TEETH AND CALMLY TOOK OFF WITH IT!!! This was not a small apple, it had to weight almost as much as he did.....he took it to his tree and started eating some more. THEN HE PROCEEDED TO CLIMB THE VERY TALL TREE WITH THIS HUGE APPLE IN HIS JAW!!!!
It was amazing. He found a branch he liked and sat there and ate it. Right as I was leaving he dropped it and it rolled down the hill. My servile tendancies towards animals came out and I ran down the hill and fetched it for him. He watched me with great interest. I placed it at the base of the tree and ran to get my camera. He obliged me by coming down and eating a little more before abandoning it for I don't know, stealing a watermelon off the bench down the path maybe? Clearly there is little this squirrel isn't capable of hauling off. Next week I'm bringing more healthy, squirrel oriented snacks to see if he comes back.
